Northwood Boys Varsity Soccer started their division matches with a win against the Paint Branch Panthers on Tuesday night in a 7:15 pm home game. Sophomore Nelson Fernandez scored his third goal of the season in the first half on a perfectly placed through ball from senior midfielder Brandon Vargas. The Panthers tied the game midway through the first half and nearly scored late in the second half, but sophomore goalkeeper Bryant Umanzor made an incredible top corner save on a bending shot from outside of the box to keep the game level at 1-1. Neither team scored in the second half, leading to sudden death overtime.

With two minutes remaining in the first overtime period, Nelson Fernandez, standing just outside of the opponents’ penalty area, caught a ball on his chest facing away from the goal. The ball popped up perfectly, and Fernandez swung his right foot to scissor kick the ball into the top corner above the Panther goalkeeper’s outstretched hand. Fernandez’s overtime goal, his fourth of the season, sealed the victory for the Gladiators.
